This dazzling work of art from the Harry Winston Ultimate Adornment collection, can be worn as a brooch or a pendant, and is composed of 62 carats of diamonds and 14 feathers. The brooch twirls and pivots to form a splendid fanned shape composed of gossamer-light feathers. In 2010, BALL Watch Company was the premier watchmaker to present the first mechanical movement including a day and date function combined with a 24-hour time zone display. The “Engineer Master II Diver Worldtime” and “Trainmaster Worldtime” models were the first BALL timepieces to have a caliber with this new module developed specially in our workshops.

In this way, BALL is offering a new tool that is able to display at any given moment the common denominator of all human beings, namely the passage of time and the value that each man and woman places on it.

In its absolute respect for the values of precision, reliability and tradition of the “Trainmaster” series, the Worldtime Chronograph thus provides a worthy addition to the BALL watches combining a day and date function with the time display in the 24 hour zones. Grafted onto an automatic ETA 7750 movement, a special module drives a disk engraved with the names of the planet’s main metropolises rotating automatically in the reverse direction to the hands, so that it simultaneously indicates the time in 24 different geographic zones. Hewn in steel, the Masterpiece Lune Retrograde is a subtle fusion of contemporary spirit and experienced craftsmanship. Presenting two complications held in great esteem by Maurice Lacroix, the Masterpiece Lune Retrograde opts to capture time in a 43 mm diameter case, thus renewing its links with a more traditional size. Water resistant to 50 meters, it alternates satin and polished finishes without ostentation, displaying its craftsmanship with impressive clarity. A deep sense of authenticity springs from its blue dial, imbuing time with unquestionable maturity.

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Lune Rétrograde

The slightly raised time markers – subtle despite their high-tech engineering – are emphasized by the satin sunburst finish of the dial whose royal blue testifies to the nobility of their craftsmanship. Encircled by a hand display marking the days of the week, the moon asserts itself at 6 o’clock. It turns on a black disk in striking chiaroscuro, as if the skies themselves were within reach. The calendar is housed at 10 o’clock in a wide retrograde arch, while the power reserve is dynamically displayed at 2 o’clock. Enhanced by a crescent of appliqué hour markers that gradually fan out, it evokes a real sense of movement. The hours and minutes adopt the traditional central position so as not to disturb the almost architectural balance of the piece. In a striking play of light, their slender hands are graced with a diamond finish enhanced still further by a slight curve, an additional detail that ensures complete legibility.

The self-winding ML 192 movement, manufactured entirely in-house, bears the stamp of the highest Swiss watchmaking traditions. Its workings, down to the smallest component, are revealed by the sapphire crystal case, while its brushed vertical and Grand Colimaçon finishes reflect the light down to the jewels themselves.

The new Masterpiece Lune Rétrograde comes with an optional leather strap and is available with dials in slate and silver/gold two-tone. The now famed Unico manufacture chronograph movement has undergone its first ever evolution. Its base will now house a GMT function, which has been entirely developed and manufactured in-house by Hublot.

The main technical feature of this GMT complication is that is gives the time in the different time zones using an expert set of 4 rotating aluminium discs. They are controlled by a push-button housed in the case middle at 2 o’clock which allows the discs to be simultaneously positioned, allowing the time in the city, selected from the 14 available, to be instantly and directly read.
With an elegant, practical and functional design, the King Power Unico GMT has a 48 mm dial and is available in two versions, ceramic or King Gold red gold ceramic, featuring a dial which is easy to read despite the wealth of indications it contains, and which allows the beautiful mechanics of the calibre to be admired. The acclaim of the public and connoisseurs reserved for the now famous square wheel has led the range to be extended towards a level of ultimate refinement. In 2010, Maurice Lacroix revolutionized the mechanics of time by designing a square gear wheel –a first in watchmaking history which, beyond its aesthetic value, inaugurated a new way of charting the onward march of time. In 2011, the Maurice Lacroix square wheel offered new angle on time’s course with its focus on the seconds hand. This year, the Masterpiece Roue Carrée Seconde has been adorned with pink gold in order to highlight the exclusivity of its display mechanism.

Who can tear their eyes away from this right-angled wheel in perpetual motion? No easy task; as the mechanism is completely captivating. Fashioned in pink gold, like all the time markers, it is set against the backdrop of a brown-black bottom plate. The striking contrast accentuates the hypnotic effect of its angular journey and the geometrical interplay of its lines and curves. The small seconds display comes to life before our eyes with the lively and rhythmic pace of the perforated square wheel, itself driven by a second clover-shaped wheel. With corners and edges that fit together as precisely as their circular counterparts, the two gears rotate continuously to produce a highly dynamic visual effect and remind us that time never varies in its onward journey.

The hours, minutes and power reserve are engraved directly on the plate of the movement and worked in gold. The 46 mm diameter steel case affords time a generous arena in which to express itself with characteristic boldness. The alternating satin and polished finishes highlight the forms. A large sapphire crystal case back reveals the mechanical ML156 movement, decorated with Grand Colimaçon in the purest Swiss watchmaking tradition.

Dedicated to excellence, the new Masterpiece Roue Carrée Seconde Gold embodies the very spirit of the collection. A spirit in which engineering and aesthetics combine forces to push back the boundaries of design. Designed by engineer watchmaker Michel Vermot in collaboration with the Haute Ecole Arc du Locle, the square wheel mechanism took years of development. By definition, the gears of the non-circular gear wheels cannot be regular. The principal challenge was therefore to determine the shape of their teeth, in order to guarantee constant power transmission. The wheels were made using LiGA technology, a revolutionary process combining the techniques of photolithography and electroforming to produce micro-components of high precision and finesse, unmatched by traditional machining methods.

Engineer watchmaker Michel Vermot taught for 20 years at the Haute Ecole Arc, located in Le Locle (Switzerland). A specialist in mechanical and electronic watchmaking, he managed many industrial projects at HEArc. He now runs the Movement Development Department at Maurice Lacroix. (Maurice Lacroix press)
