No machine on Earth demonstrates time quite like the tourbillon. Indeed it could be the most sophisticated physical depiction of an abstract notion ever developed by man. This hypnotic, rotating and oscillating mechanical world reveals multiple facets of time: its unfailing regularity, its intricacy, its inevitability and a culture of time measurement as old as humanity.

In its Histoire de Tourbillon collection, Harry Winston recognizes the tourbillon as a medium of artistic expression unique in scope, depth and subject — a work of art that shows you not only the time, but the nature of time itself. Mathematicians, engineers, craftsmen, philosophers and designers combine to challenge the laws of physics by creating a mechanical dance that unveils time’s tantalizing secrets. The third series in Harry Winston’s exploration of the tourbillon choreographs two rotating escapements that guide the time unscathed through the pitfalls of gravity.

Three tourbillons are in action, each rotating at different speeds to perform distinct gravitydefying functions. Two of them are nested one inside the other to rotate the fourth dimension of time through the three dimensions of space. In this bi-axial tourbillon, one tourbillon carriage rotates every 40 seconds within a second carriage going around in 120 seconds on an axis perpendicular to the first. This ensures that the vibrating balance moves through every possible plane in relation to the field of gravity to average out positional errors.
The third tourbillon carriage rotates a separate balance on a single axis in the conventional way, but at the relatively high speed of one revolution every 36 seconds. This tourbillon is most effective when the watch is in a vertical position, and by rotating the balance quickly it minimizes its exposure to the effects of gravity. For even greater precision, the two regulating systems are connected through a differential gear that gives an average of their two rates. Uniting three tourbillions and two escapements with different properties in terms of mass, rotational velocity and inertia proved to be a delicate exercise in the balance of power. For example, the double tourbillon system has to be made as light as possible using titanium and aluminum alloys so that it does not consume a disproportionate amount of power at the expense of the single tourbillon.

The watchcase, engineered to display the tourbillon systems to their best advantage, is unlike any other. The complex architecture is constructed of 77 parts in white gold and non-reflecting sapphire crystals with the caseband and lugs in Zalium®, a hard and ultra-light zirconium alloy. Developed for use in jet engines, its non-allergenic properties and extreme resistance to corrosion make it ideal for watchcases. The fluid outlines of the tourbillon housing in polished white gold contrast sharply with the rectangular rigidity of the lower case displaying the indications. Even the Harry Winston triplearch motifs on the lugs have been squared off. Lustrous finishes — surfaces brushed to a silky texture, gleaming chamfers and the matt battleship grey of the Zalium® — set off the bold outlines of this extraordinary architecture.

The hours and minutes are shown on discs rotating against their respective markers, and the seconds on a scale around the bi-axial tourbillon. Harry Winston shows off its flair with gemstones by using sapphires and citrines to indicate the power reserve. Eleven color-graded blue sapphires from dark to pale show the power left in the mainspring. The markers for the hours and minutes are color-matched with the gemstones. When the six yellow citrines appear against the marker, it’s time to wind up the watch.

Created in the 19th Century, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) originally referred to solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. Already used by the British navy to calculate their longitude position from the Greenwich meridian, it was introduced in the United Kingdom by the Railway Clearing House in 1847. It was then legally adopted as official time throughout Great Britain in 1880, and then in the entire world for the major part of the 20th Century, before being replaced in 1972 by UTC, Universal Time, Coordinated, due to the inconsistency of average solar time.

GMT is usually used in the watchmaking world to designate watches with a second time zone. GMT is based on terrestrial rotation, while UTC on atomic international time therefore the two time measurements are close but not the same. Unlike GMT, UTC offers the current view of time zone division directly linked to the real rotation of the earth, and less variable.

F.P.Journe innovates once again with the presentation of the Octa UTC®, a patented system that uses the modern standards of determining time zones in full hours. Mechanically it indicates the different time periods linked with the earth’s geographical positions, including summer and winter hour.

On the dial, the local hours are indicated by the blue hands, and linked to the calendar indicating the current geographical time. The rose gold hand indicates the hour of the second time zone on 24 hours, represented by the earth’s 24 time zones.

Utilisation
The hour of the home time zone is set by pushing the small secured pusher at 4h00. After having pulled the crown in position 2, the wearer moves the globe so that the home time zone is positioned on 0 for winter hour. Simultaneously, the gold hand automatically adjusts itself to the corresponding hour of this region. The purpose of the +1 / -1 indicators is to change the specific region for summer hour which is linked to the geographical location of the user depending if its east or west of the chosen zone.

The mechanical movement with automatic winding is manufactured in 18K rose gold, like all F.P.Journe –Invenit et Fecit watch creations. It is constructed on the 1300.3 calibre, and offers an additional complication to the Octa line, still in the same calibre dimensions. The dial features off centre hours, minutes and seconds, a retrograde power reserve, a large date, and for the first time, a dial with the earth divided in time zones. The passing of the months from 28 to 31 days is done manually.

The OCTA UTC also features the 22K red gold exclusive off centre rotor that winds in one direction only, thanks to an exclusive self-blocking ceramic ball bearing system. Every infinitesimal movement is thus maximally exploited for an optimized winding of the watch. Swatch Group terminates partnership with Tiffany & Co. New York for material breach of contract

Today Swatch Group terminated its cooperation contracts with Tiffany & Co. This action became necessary following Tiffany & Co’s systematic efforts to block and delay development of the business.

Within the framework of the long-term partnership agreement, in spring 2008, Swatch Group founded Tiffany Watch Co. Ltd., which was responsible for the development, production and distribution of « Tiffany & Co. » branded watches. Worldwide sales were handled through points of sale operated by Tiffany & Co., by The Swatch Group Ltd. and by independent retailers.

Tiffany Watch Co. Ltd. will be permitted to wind down current business over the course of two years following effective termination of the cooperation contracts.

Swatch Group and Tiffany Watch Co. Ltd. will press claims for damages against Tiffany & Co., New York, in compensation for the loss of planned long-term future business. (Swatch press)
