Every single detail, and, mind you, there are many of them, breathes the atmosphere of speed and adrenaline. First of all there is the case with its black concave bezel forged out of carbon fibre, contrasting with a turquoise blue ring indicating a second time zone. The crown is secured by an additional hexagonal bolt, whereas the oval pushers for the chronograph controls bear the same suregrip surface as the pedals of a racing car. We have incorporated a so-called flyback mechanism into it, a sophisticated device that enables the user to reset the chronograph to zero without stopping it. After releasing the flyback pusher, the seconds hand will restart immediately from zero. This device is used to record the times of different consecutive events.
The dial itself is crafted from carbon fibre, a material that is ideal for the use in aviation and motor sports because it combines extraordinary lightness with absolute mechanical stiffness. Apart from that, its textile character makes for its remarkable beauty, which is why we’ve chosen it for the dial of the Graham Big Silverstone Stowe Racing. To achieve rigidity and strength the ultra-thin carbon fibres are first woven into a fabric and then laminated with a transparent plastic resin. After drying it is very stiff, lightweight and resistant to temperature changes.
To provide the best contrast possible we have used signal colours such as orange and turquoise blue for the numerals and the rims of the minute counter and the second time zone. The six hands on the dial are so clearly designed in their individual functions that there cannot be any sort of confusion. The minute and hour hand have their own design which distinguishes them clearly from the chronograph functions with their red tips. Of the long GMT hand only the triangular bright yellow tip is seen as it passes along the outer rim of the dial. It can be adjusted in steps of an hour independently from the regular hour hand. In order to enable the user to measure speeds we have equipped the flange with a tachymeter scale. At the 6 o’clock position a double-disc large date window has been inserted. The automatic calibre G1721 comprises all these functions and guarantees a power reserve of 42 hours.
The steel caseback is secured by eight screws and bears the insignia of the Royal Marine Crown coat of arms. The watch is watertight to a depth of 330 feet.
It is worn on a rubber strap with the optics of the tread of a racing-car tyre or a leather strap. An orange inset repeats the dial motto on the rubber strap. (GRAHAM press)
