On Thursday 13th November 2008, Juan-Carlos Torres, Vacheron Constantin’s CEO, received the Jury Prize in the “Men’s Watch” category for its new model the Quai de l’Ile Day-Date & Power Reserve Self-winding.

The award was made in front of an audience of 2000 people at the Grand Théâtre of Geneva. In his reception speech on behalf of the brand, Juan-Carlos Torres said: 

“By its decision to give first prize for the Men’s Watch to Vacheron Constantin for its Quai de l’Ile, the jury of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie of Geneva has rewarded and honoured the brand’s innovative and pioneering spirit, a spirit that is still intact after 250 years of accumulated savoir-faire.

I thank the jury for its decision and would like to share this prize with all our colleagues at Vacheron Constantin. High-tech materials
Blackened titanium plays the starring role. This ultra-light material has been chosen for the case and the surrounding elements: studs, pushpieces and pushpiece guards, crown and oversized strap buckle. The same goes for the medallion back featuring a special non-slip texture. Titanium also shows up on the lower part of the octagonal bezel, while its upper part opts for ceramics. The latter is distinguished by clearly marked vertical grooves reminiscent of the characteristic satin finish of the Royal Oak Offshore collection.

Chronographs are currently enjoying a major comeback as the useful complication and a significant token of horological expertise. Sensitive to this renewed interest, Daniel Roth proudly introduces the first ever chronograph version of its iconic Papillon watch: the Papillon Chronograph.

The makings of an icon
First, however, a brief historical reminder is in order. Introduced in 1999 as part of celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the Daniel Roth brand, the first edition of the Papillon created a considerable stir among watch connoisseurs. Its blend of aesthetic and technical innovations eloquently illustrated the distinctive features of the Daniel Roth approach to watchmaking, combining prestigious traditions and techniques with groundbreaking design.

Powered like its predecessor by an ultra-thin self-winding Girard-Perregaux movement and capable of accommodating the additional modules for the complications developed and manufactured by the Daniel Roth engineers, technicians and watchmakers, it is naturally finished entirely at the Manufacture Daniel Roth in Le Sentier. This excellent calibre is housed in the new version of the brand’s signature ellipsocurvex case ensuring an optimal fit on the wrist. A polished “cover” encloses the upper part of the watch, the smooth surface of which is broken only by the jump hour window and a smaller central seconds window. Meanwhile, a “smile-shaped” display extending over the entire lower part of the dial enables one to follow the intricate workings of the fascinating minute-hand mechanism in operation.

The DeWitt Museum, situated near the reception area at the entrance to the building, takes visitors on a fascinating voyage through watchmaking history. The stylish Museum, decorated in soft, warm tones, showcases one the world’s largest collections of tools and machinery – over 250 items in all – retracing nearly three centuries of watchmaking craftsmanship.

The museum’s exhibits range from the 17th to early 20th centuries – a period when watchmaking was carried out entirely by hand. The aesthetically displayed tools and machinery highlight Switzerland’s heritage of watchmaking craftsmanship, with a step-by-step presentation of the traditional manufacturing stages (some now abandoned due to industrialization) of mechanical timepieces.

The new Pharo adds a useful and desirable power reserve indicator to a distinguished hand wound movement and results in a sophisticated time piece. It features the thin Eta 7001 hand wound movement with power reserve modul.

The high grade finished movement, with Geneva stripes, perlage and blued screws, is visible through the sapphire crystal back.

The elaborate dial is dominated by elegant ‘Clous-de-Paris’ and sun ray guilloché pattern with the small second at 6 o’clock and the indication of the power reserve eccentrically positioned at 12 o’clock. Indexes and Roman numerals are hand applied on the dial, complimented by the fine lancet hands.

The stainless steel case has a domed sapphire crystal with a two-side anti-reflex coating and impresses with an elegantly grooved case band (cannelage). The Ickler logo is embossed onto the crown.
